Computer Department

The computer department at the institute is one of the most sophisticated and modern departments in this part of the country. It is equipped with a hardware, software and networking unit. The department is tasked with the following functions:

  • Maintenance of network: CIP has an exhaustive Fiber Optic Network with Wi-Fi access across the Institute’s premises which connects the entire Institute and enables internet activities and information to be made available for all the departments including postgraduate hostels;
  • Internet Management: Two high speed leased lines (10 Mbps from BSNL and 10 Mbps from Rail Tel and a 2Mbps Broadband) are available at CIP;
  • National Knowledge Network (NKN) 100Mbps dedicated line to connect with all major educational institute of India for research and academic purposes;
  • SUN Microsystems Cluster (Server): The server installed in the Institute as Database Server requires complete management like the creation of users, providing rights to them; periodic backup of data being accumulated on daily basis and providing interconnection at approved locations. It is also used for huge mathematical calculations which it can complete within a few minutes. New additions include Altos server management and Procom server management which facilitate multiple CD searches simultaneously. Recently the medical library at CIP has been equipped with 46 TB SAN storage server which can accumulate and process a significant volume of electronic data;
  • Closed circuit (CCTV) monitoring;
  • Education Programs: Conduction of programs like Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) involve preparation of audio-visual material in the computer department;
  • Research activities: Preparation of protocols of research, data sheets, manuscripts for publication, transparencies, slides and power-point presentations and analyses of data occur at the department;
  • Software management: To ensure proper installation and working of all the existing software at the Institute;
  • Entrance examination related work: CIP conducts an All India Entrance examination for admission to various courses annually which is managed electronically by the computer department. The application forms are submitted electronically and admit cards are made available online. The examination results are generated on the same day using a fully computerized OMR reading system.
  • Customized software management: CIP acquired customized software for official work in the process of making all official documentation simple and transparent. The database resides on the central server and is maintained regularly to ensure a smooth running of the software. A database administrator assigns proper rights to the users of the software to prevent leakage of important official information and maintenance of the backup database. CIP has been using various software for routine office works including salary management and keeping the establishment records of the hospital. A biometric attendance system is managed at the computer section for keeping the track of attendance of the employees;
  • CIP Website: The computer department ensures the maintenance and up-gradation of the Institue website regularly to provide the latest information on the web and to avoid RTI violations;
  • The department aims to provide statistical consultation and service to researchers including the development of study designs and protocols for hospital and community-based studies. It imparts training and academic teaching in biostatistical, computational and research methods, including training in statistical computing, use of statistical packages like SPSS, R etc. The department is also involved in the application of biostatistical methods and the application of computer-oriented statistical procedures to analyze data pertaining to mental health and neurosciences. Moreover, it aims to coordinate and standardize the collection of medical statistics and other relevant information at the Institute.
