Erna Hoch Centre for Child and Adolescent psychiatry
Child psychiatry has evolved over the years as a separate discipline that deals with psychological problems in the developmental phase of life from infancy through adolescence. What initially started as child guidance clinics, fully functional child and adolescent psychiatric departments have now been setup in most reputed institution all over the world.
The first child guidance clinic was organized in India in 1936 at Mumbai. Since then a small number of child guidance clinics have been brought into existence in some of the larger cities. Child psychiatry has been an important discipline in Central institute of psychiatry, Ranchi. A child guidance clinic was started in 1950 at Ranchi by CIP and an independent 50 bedded Child psychiatry unit was started in 1975 in the premises of the institute. However the original building was converted to an outpatient department due to increase in patient load in the hospital. But again an independent building consisting of eleven rooms around thirty feet by twenty feet courtyard was provided to render services to the childhood and adolescent population. There are sixteen beds for the patients besides two cottages which can accommodate four patients each with their relatives. Besides the Doctor’s room and a Nursing station we have a play and recreation room as well. The courtyard has ample space for playing and besides a flower garden; there are a number of swings slips and seesaws for the children.
