The Department of Psychiatry at the Central Institute of Psychiatry in Ranchi is one of the country's oldest and largest. The department is actively engaged in clinical work, instruction, and research. Monday through Saturday, the department is open from 0800 to 1700 hours, with a lunch break from 1300 to 1400 hours. An efficient interdisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric social workers, and nursing personnel trained to care for mentally ill patients regularly evaluates the patient's condition. Utilizing contemporary antipsychotic, antidepressant, mood-stabilizing, and antiepileptic drugs, the patient is managed pharmacologically with the aid of contemporary treatment methods. Both inpatient and outpatient services are offered for modified electroconvulsive therapy. As part of the biopsychosocial approach to patient care, relevant psychosocial tests and interventions are implemented. Blood and other tests are performed at no cost for hospitalised patients. On the institute's central server, patient-specific case files are maintained and preserved in order to provide detailed information. The Junior Residents conduct a comprehensive history and physical examination of the admitted patient, and the Senior Resident discusses the case daily during evening rounds. During ward rounds, consultants discuss the treatment management strategy. Instructions for the nursing staff, including the prescribed medications, are documented in the Instruction Book. This is kept with the on-duty nurse. Once admitted, the patient is under the care of the Junior Resident to whom the case is assigned. Under the supervision of the Senior Resident and the Consultant, he/she is responsible for the patient's management and care.
Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the department offers outpatient mental health services (Except on holidays). On certain days, special clinics are held to address the specific needs of certain diseases. Academic activities include administrative and academic rounds, teaching programmes, lectures, and ward case discussions. The department is also responsible for developing health education materials for both professionals and non-professionals in the field of Mental Health. The training programmes are administered at the level of the Unit, the Department, and also between departments. In addition to undergraduate and postgraduate trainees from other departments of the Institute, trainees from other medical colleges and institutions also receive training. Mental health professionals are conducting a variety of research studies in collaboration with other hospital departments. Some faculty members serve on the editorial boards of numerous academic journals and as University examiners.
